larry wip
this is still really in progress....this post isn't necessarily to ask for critiques, I just wanted everyone to know I am still working on Larry. I realize the hands, arms, and torso look really bad at this point. I'll post a better update hopefully soon!

Help from beyond!
We recently added a few people to help out with all the small assets for modeling. Eliza Rocho, David Burnham, and Jedidiah "Jedi" Lion. Each of them are dedicated to to finish all modeling by July 15.
Aaron might be headed out of town for a week mid-July. So in order to make Larry look like the polished stud he is, and for us to be able to continue production on schedule, Jarom Neumann will model the pigeon. That way Aaron instead of taking just 2 weeks to model Larry, you can make him look nice and spend an extra week on him, and begin rigging him on July 8.

An Experiment
Painted over Alyssa's second pigeon to try something. Instead of having big eyes...I wanted to see what it'd look like with smaller beady eyes.
What do you y'all think? Big eyes? Or small eyes?

Larry Head update
Here's some progress on his FACE! Thanks a ton for all the feedback, sorry I'm so amateur! But I do feel it's looking a lot better. I included one where I just painted some eyes and teeth in to give kind of a preview of how he will look! What do you guys think?
I think I may focus more now on his body and try to get that modeled as soon as possible so I can use the remaining time to let you guys critique it and let me know what I can fix.
Larry Model Paintover
First off, I just wanna say that once I saw the Larry model I got chills. I thought, "Holy crap...this is actually happening!" Anyways, I hate Maya...and I know modelling is tricky business...but I decided to do a paintover of the model. Aaron, it's up to you as to how much you want to adhere to the original design, and I won't be devastated if you make changes, but I included some critiques if you're interested.

Larry Model -WIP
I really feel I'm kind of sucky at this whole modeling thing. Let me know what can improve!
It's tough to get his features as angular as it is in the concept art.
Also, the eyes and teeth are just temporary, I'll model better ones!
Also, is it my job to UV map this guy?! I may need some help with that...

Good Job Concept
I think we need to applaud Alyssa and Wesley for their fantastic work- Way to get done the Pigeon and Larry!!! They are fantastic. I'm sure Austin is ready to get goin' on modeling.
I've recruited 3 kids that just got in the program to help us model and shade all the smaller assets. Because of time limitations we really want Aaron to just focus on Larry and the Pigeon.
Wesley will be starting Storyboarding this coming week.
Alyssa will be working on Value Scripts, the mood and feeling of the film- and initial lighting of the film as she receives boards from Wesley.
I hope everyone has contacted a mentor to help them with whatever their assignments are. :) If not, now would be a good time to find one.

LARRY'S HANDS
I hate drawing hands. I've never modeled them, but I imagine I'd hate it too. Anyways, I drew these as reference for Aaron. Hopefully it helps.
LARRY - Rotating View
Well, I'm in the same boat as Alyssa. I've never made model sheets before. Hopefully this helps.
I'm going to be doing a texture reference sheet, facial expressions, an accessories sheet (for his shoes, tie, and watch) but I figured this was the most important to get posted. Well...back to work.

LARRY - 3RD PASS
Decided to go with C...and NOT just because he apparently looks like me! People on Facebook said he needed more meat on his bones...so I tried to fill him out a little.
Garrett wanted a name for him...so I'm calling him Larry.

pigeon
so i know that these two images don't line up perfectly, but this is what i'm thinking the final pigeon will look like. Please give me critiques before I start creating a model sheet! thanks
CONCEPT
This week's deadline is Friday to have Concept all finished.
-Pigeon
-Main Character
-Bench
Smaller Assets we can take a bit more time on and hand them off to kids that are accepted into the animation program this week to be modeled, or as directed by Aaron.
Make sure you keep in mind those down the pipeline. How is it going to be modeled? Will the pigeon have feathers? If so, what do they look like? Maybe even create different views and angles and even closeups on more detailed parts, so in Maya its pretty seamless to convert to 3D. For texturing, what material are thje main character's clothes? Will it be loose, tight? If you don't have colors chosen yet, it's okay. But try to have an idea of a back story for this guy so we can get to know his character and give him the personality he deserves.
A great example of a shader packet is from Pixar. If you guys would like to put together a texture packet so that your characters you create will actually end up looking like the characters you see in 3D, it might be a good idea to create one of these.

Pigeon update
so Wesley and I talked yesterday and agreed that F and G were the designs we were liking most. I tried to kind of combine the two designs and see if I could get something that was a happy medium between the two. I don't feel like I'm pushing my designs enough though. I still really like F, and #6 that I did today I think has really good shapes in it. One of the big decisions for the pigeon design is how to do the eyes. Beady and small like the finding nemo seagulls, or actual eyeballs with pupils. I'm trying to find a way to design the pigeon where you can't quite tell if you should think it's cute or if you should be afraid of it.
The Story
by Wesley Tippetts
One lovely afternoon, a big city businessman decides to take his lunch break outside in a nearby park. He walks up to a little bench, places his briefcase next to him and opens his sack lunch. He pulls out a sandwich and opens wide for his first bite.
One lovely afternoon, a big city businessman decides to take his lunch break outside in a nearby park. He walks up to a little bench, places his briefcase next to him and opens his sack lunch. He pulls out a sandwich and opens wide for his first bite.
Just before he bites the sandwich, he notices a pigeon. It flies up to him and stares at the sandwich with its big beady eyes. It tilts its head and blinks. The businessman looks nervously at his sandwich and then back at the pigeon. The pigeon licks it beak.
Suddenly, the pigeon attacks like a pitbull, latching onto the sandwich. The businessman tries to yank the sandwich away, but the pigeon WILL NOT LET GO!
A tug-of-war ensues between a grown man and a small, but voracious pigeon. The business man tries with all his strength to pull his sandwich free...but he is overpowered and falls to the ground. The pigeon swallows the sandwich and looks down at him. It hops closer to him as he lays on the ground.
The businessman feels around in his jacket for something else to give the pigeon so it won't eat him alive. He reaches inside his jacket and pulls out an Alka-Seltzer tablet. He looks at the pigeon. It licks its beak again. The businessman smiles, rips off the wrapper like he's pulling the pin of a grenade and chucks the Alka-Seltzer far away. He then curls up in a ball to protect himself.
The pigeon hops off the bench, flies over, and eats the Alka-Seltzer. It then inflates, it's body growing like a balloon. The camera cuts back to the man. We hear a loud explosion, a bright flash, and a puff of feathers. He lifts up his head and it cuts back to the bird. All that is left are two smoking pigeon legs surrounded by a charred black blast radius.
The businessman dusts himself off and sits back down on the bench. He has a smug grin as he pulls out a cookie from his brown paper sack. He smells it, feeling quite proud of his victory. He suddenly hears the cooing sounds of hundreds of pigeons. He opens his eyes to see a large group of pigeons staring at the cookie he now holds.
The camera cuts back to the businessman who gulps.

thumbs
these thumbnails are to get an idea of what should/shouldn't be in the scene for this short. Are these too complicated? Do we need to simplify. I like C and A a lot. Wesley's thumbnails for this scene are fantastic too. We just need to know if we need to design lampposts or trees or anything else random that should be in the scene.
Here are some color examples I'm leaning toward
i have pigeon ref I could post too, but I think I'm going to hold off on that one
FIGURING OUT COMPOSITION AND POSSIBLE COLOR SCHEME
I'm happy with the color version. I would like to fit in a street lamp...but it serves its purpose as a rough. I'm also liking the swirly design. I repeated it in the branches three times before I realized I was even doing it. I incorporated it into the bench. It could be a recurring design...like in Disney's Hercules. Who knows.
THOUGHTS?! IDEAS?! CRITIQUES?!
